how do i structure 55gal drum to filter?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The only way I see this working off gravity is to make the main feed pipe come from the bottom of the first barel and over flowing to the second and then vice versa the only problem being that once the water fills the second barel it may not have enoph force to fill the third do to an equalibrium being established and thus major oveflow of the second barel. Imo it is a posibilty you may have to concider. As well as concidering a pump to help move things along just a thaught.

sure it will... as long as the pipes are below water level all 5 barrels are gonna fill to water level. now it's how 'fast' the water is replaced when the water is pumped out and the more the filters become blocked might be a problem. that's why i want to run the 1st 4 as dual side by side(1st two get individual 4" line in, then the 2nd two, then both into the 5th, where it will be pumped out)to get as much flow as possible. also giving me double the filtration capacity. 4" are the only thing available to use that's why i'm doubling it. plus my 1st pump 3600gph was replaced by the supplier and i don't think it has the power of 3600gph.
pumping it to the barrels will not work... 2 years ago i made a temp 55gal filter using just a 1200gph pump with a 1½" outlet and it was close to being too much for the 4" built in overflow in the drum. by being gravity fed i don't have to worry about the barrels becoming overwhelmed due to blockage... the pump will simply shut off/on, no urgencies to drop everything to clean the filters.

...but you still may be right . this is just my opinion :screwy:. i hope i don't have the problem you've mentioned :nilly:.

I realy hope you don't either. And I hope I ha ve not cursed you by saying this lol. Your method seems sound and almost fool proof I have several 55 gal drums that I have been loking at in hopes of helping you and the milk crate was all I culd think of if you email or pm me some of your ideas I may be able to toss some of mine your way if you can draw up the set up of the barels and some structer ideas it wuld help greatly aswell my email is duster1971@live.com

i have no plans. that's why i'm here... i need ideas. the basic setup is what i said from the beginning.

this is where i'm at with the project.

the left and right drums are going to have their own individual 4"pipe running into them from the skimmer. then to the next 2, then both will go into the last

I hope this helps.
It is IMO by far not enough filtration for your pond but it is a start.
You will need to clean the prefilter on a regular basis as you will encounter draw down issues due to lack of flow through and this will run you pump dry.
You can use a shop vac to supply air for the blower manifold as well as vac the floor to keep the DW happy.
