that makes sense also but i have two holes on the top of my overflow walls that i thought were for the returns, What are they for?

Hmm... You're probably right the holes on the overflow walls have to be for the returns. They're certainly not there to fill up the overflow box! Perhaps the two holes on the top were for uptake and return lines for additional filtration--like a canister filter.

WOW :WHOA: Super clean may i ask what do you have in your tank?

The first pic was of a brand new tank. Actually, when we set up our tank, we put in our two pacu, two oscars and two pleco....six of the original eight fish that we rescued in a 55 gallon tank. Living most of their lives in overcrowded bad conditions, the oscars and plecos all died over a 3 year period.

We are in the process of upgrading the pacu home. There are 11 holes in the top of the tank to accommodate all the uptake and return lines for the mega filtration planned for the new tank. This doesn't include the six holes in the two external overflow boxes (48" x 6")....so there will be 8' of slots on the back wall draining into the overflows. We'll be using 1.5" pipe. Setting up the 300 gallon tank was good practice for the monster tank we're going to be setting up....lots of bulkheads, lots of pipe...lots elbows and connectors... my husband has his work cut out for him.:)
