How do I...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I ended up deciding that we would just get 1/4 in glass and set it inside the cracked piece and glue it in. Anyone see anything wrong with that idea??

you could patch it like that... but it's not guaranteed it will hold or work and i dont really recommend it, it probably wouldn't be that safe, and you would have to drill the ends of the cracks so it doesn't crack any further and 1/4" would be too thin, you would need atleast 1/4" on either side, but more like 1/2".... replacing the whole pain would be much better, some razor blades and guitar strings and gloves and your on your way to the hospital! lol j/k

really though once you get that front off it's a sense of accomplishment, once you've got the new one on and it's full of water it's an even bigger sense of accomplishment....especially when you just saved yourself $1000....who could complain about that?

If it was acrylic, it would work. Because acrylic glue is water thin and it actually melts both peices together to bond them permanently. -------------But with glass you have to use silicone and there is no way to cover the replacement pane 100% before you lay it in place. All you can do is put a bunch of beads on it and then try to squeeze out the air. Which can not be done 100%. I would be very scared of that tank after a repair like that. It WILL be a ticking time bomb. I always try to operate with the thought of fix it right or don't fix it at all.
