i have mixed emotions right now on dempseys.

My male used to be so cool, so i got him a female.
he terrorized her, and i couldnt get them to breed for the life of me.
Took female out and now hes just dumb.

They really are beautiful fish. But there personality just sway too much in my opinion from one individual to the next.

my dempsey is pretty big and hes the dom. in the tank. he has a excellent personality but i think its because hes brain damaged if thats possible. I live with some horrible excuses for human beings who because they hate me, put soap in my tank and killed 99% of my fish a while ago. the jack dempsey was floating on the surface breathing once every like 30 seconds. I put him in a dish of water to put him in a nice place so he could die peacefully but he did NOT wanna die.He managed to snap out of it when I got him to a different tank. Long story short I have him still, hes my pride and joy but he has seisures and always is sideways kinda when hes swimming. I think if that didnt happen he may have ended up bein an ass like the typical jd.

Age does not determine whether people reply to your threads or not. Usually, its the punctuation involved. *Hint hint*. Dempsey's are only too easy to sex. Females have a brightly covered gill cover but are more drab overall compared to a male. Males on the otherhand have less gill cover colouration then the female, but are much more colourful. Posts some pictures if your still unsure.
And just off the record, Im 14.

alright, i have a pair of JD and an extra male jack dempsey+100+fry. they are quite easy to breed and hardy and worth getting they are awesome fish. at 3" you could choose 2 ways of getting a pair:
1) buy a male and female- male no blue tint on gill plate and female blue tint on gill plate also males are "normaly" alot more colourful than female.
i picked this way because could get hold of anymore than one for about 6months. but some times the pair are not as strong and may beat on each other when breeding- BUT all cichlids can do this, its just more common when getting a proven male and female.
2) buy 6 random jack dempseys and grow them out, they will fight each other until the strongest 2 of mixed sexs-a pair:) but this way you could lose the other 4, so you would have to sell them or give them back to the lfs. this new formed pair will be a stronger together.
i will try and get pics of mine.
GL and btw iam 15:)
