I'm not sure you could catch a one inch gar in any commercial fish trap I have ever seen. I've been collecting for 45 years and I have only caught three baby gars in that time even though they are common where I live. A one inch gar would be like a sewing needle, you would have to have a very small mesh net to catch one. The smallest I have been able to catch was about three inches and it almost went through my net with a 1/16 inch mesh, as for bait, a gar might come into a trap that was full of tiny fish but I'm not sure if any dead or meat bait would attract them.

are they really that thin???
do they have the long snouts??
what are good areas of waterways to find babies???
is dipnetting good???

The 3 inch fish I recently caught had a long snout and lots of tiny needle sharp teeth. If it hadn't got it's teeth caught in my net I wouldn't have been able to catch him! Dip up the floating plant leaves you find along the sides of a creek or stream. If they are there that's where they will be, dip netting is about the only way to catch them, most seines have 1/4 inch mesh and that simply won't catch a tiny gar!

I saw some people that clearly knew what they were doing catch gar. They used a cloth like net. No wholes, just like 10 X 4 peice of T-Shirt material. It took like 4 guys to sweep it in a bend in a small stream. The babies were in a really heavily planted area. they just swept the cloth through the plants and when they pulled it up they must have had thousands of tiny gar. Like 1/2 an inch. They were just checking on the population I guess because they took a couple of pictures marked down some stuff on a note pad and released the fish.

i would love to see thousands of tiny gar. i have only seen 6 and 2 were in the lake.
