not sure how universal this is, but for my JD's, the darker (almost black) ones at a young age tend to be females. The light brown ones tend to be males. But the blue gill is an absolute for females.
 
From what I understand overall color and how much specks/spangling on the gills there is. But I dont know at what size sex is evident. Im guessing 3/4 inches.
 
ok that what i thought. r the girls less aggressive?

The changes in color can just be stress. The blue beard for females is best way.
