How do you afford so many tanks?

I'm typically not a poster to threads but I like where this ones going. I've been raising fish since I was in elementary school, breeding fish since middle skool, and then got a part time job at a LFS when I was in HS. Being passionate about something will get you to your goals. Through college I paid my living expenses by breeding fish, being involved in local clubs, making friends at LFS also helped move my fish. You're advantage these days is the internet, forums, ebay and Aquabid. My advice, stay in skool, get a good job and you can have as many tanks as big as you like!

I have a small fish room, my biggest tank is only a 900gal, but one day I hope to have something much bigger. Good Luck with your Fish Adventures!!! I hope the hobby continues to have fresh blood as many of my fellow members of the fish clubs I belong to are much older than me.

only 900 gallons hahah. i was always into fish i just never kept the, i have always loved fishing since i was really young. i had a betta when i was 5 to 10 years old. the cat decided to knock the bowl off the desk. i was so pissed and upset that he didnt make it. i wouldnt mind working in a fish store for a few years until i got my real job. i think it is the most relaxing thing you can do is be around fish. i think when people have so many fish tank scattered throughout the living room it makes the house look bad. i see so many videos on youtube where they have fish tanks everywhere and it just looks horrible. but when it is all in one room and organized i think it looks pretty cool. i hope to one day breed fish. the most tanks i ever really want would be no more than 5 all in one room and organized. i have recently tried getting my friends to start going fishing with me, maybe they will one day get into it.

leo what type of fish is that in your pic, amazing colors

You have to have space, easy going spouses and patience. I got my 10.7x3x2 500gallon for $450. You just have to keep looking :)
But you have to remember plywood build isnt a cheap way to build a quality tank.

Start simple and you'll quickly start to build a collection. You'll find deals here and there. Look at garage sales and flea markets. People will be giving you their unwanted parts, etc and you'll have lots of stuff in a very short time. As for costs, I have a small 2 bedroom house that runs the A/C 24/7. I have a total of 7 tanks. Each with a heater and two canister filters. I run the lights a lot, too. My largest tank is only a 100 gallon. My smallest is a 29. The electric bill for the whole house this month was $115. And THAT includes doing two loads of laundry pretty much every day. The cost of running a tank can be pretty cheap when you have the knowledge to to your own work. Start small. get the feel for it and you'll be fine.

Don't just keep fish, learn how to breed them. Sell them to other hobbyists or to your local fish store. With the money, buy more tanks, fish, and supplies and pay for your electricity usage. Eventually you will break even or turn a profit. That is how many fishrooms are built.

Im going to have to thank uncle sam and an 8000 first time home buyer credit for my biggest tank... but the rest I buy when I get a big paycheck. Im in sales so I have learned to get by when times are tough, and I set a goal when I make X(amount of dollars) in a week, im going to blow the check on my next big purchase
