Blackworms were first discovered in ditches from waste coming from Tomato canary here in Central California. I new a farmer who cultivated blackworms on his farm in a big mud pond that was about 2ft deep. He would dump truck loads old fruit old Tomato's and other organic waste into this pond. The water must be kept aerated with pumps that agitated the water. They would go into these pond and screen the mud with fish nets by hand to collect the blackworms. They would put the blackworms into a constant flow of freshwater that would go through a series of step troughs that would clean out the mud leaches waterbugs flatworms and debris till they had just clean worms. He sold them to all the pet stores around Northern California.
