How do you catch crayfish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
There are crayfish traps you can buy, I used to catch them by hand or with a small minnow net in a stream by my house.

I just grab them with my hand.Do it fast get them by the carapace and they cant reach to pinch you.

Thats what I did but when I tried, it was after fishing and caught no crayfish. I definatly will bring the bucket and net next time I go.

Thats what I did 30 years ago & my kids do it now...

i grab them by my hands or just use fishing string with chicken liver or any meat and a net. most i've ever caught were 2 5gallon buckets full

When I was on vacation in Branson, Mo. at Table Rock Lake the guy that owned the cabins had a big boat dock. There he had a crayfish trap like the ones you buy at the store. He took a bunch of chicken bones, must have just ate KFC. Any ways just throw the bones in the trap and tie a rope long enough to reach the bottom and check it in the morning. When he did this I saw the biggest crawdads I have ever seen in my life. The pincher were like 5 inces and bigger. They looked lke freekin lobster! LOL! Not to mention that there were like 30+ crawdads. Hope this helps!

traps work sometimes

bassproshop website
cabelas.com
or any good bait and takle shop

alot of you guys are up north were the water is clearer and catching them with nets or string is easier

where there is alot of aquatic vegitation i use a big minnow net i got at wallmart and scrape it through the weeds and get a good bit that way. especially if the water is up into the grass they like the really shallow water.

i also get good suprises like flagfish bass catfish clarias catfish bowfin snails turtles sirens even a water mocasin on several trips. that gets the heart beating.

when i was a kid they would build tunnels right in the middle of the yard and i could get them out with a string. they also used to climb up the gutters. these were alot biger and different than what i used to see in the clear streams or here in fl

i actually use a shrimp trap! you can make your own with small chicken wire. I throw some meat in there throw in in my local nasty *** ditch come back nexxt day i have all kinds of nasty stuff. I also have caught tiny lg bass that way! 2 inch bass. Well its up to you. I like the sock idea (cause its not fun when some1 steals your traps! Alo i am sure they have DIY on shrimp traps. google: how to make shrimp traps!
