No matter what you do there is gonna be poo and stuff on the sand, especially if you have a pleco in the tank (like me.) I just learned to live with it between water changes.

w3rd. as soon as i clean the poo from my 55, it's already covered w/i an hour. as long as the params are ok, don't worry too much about getting all of it. having a powerhead that pushes the debris to one part of the tank helps.
on a different forum, I read an article about under gravel jets. basically involved a sponge filter, a reverse flow powerhead and some creative under gravel pvc piping. I personally have never tried it, but have heard from every account of people who have that it works amazing and there is never any muck to suck up when they try to do gravel vacuuming. maybe it would work for sand? I will see if I can find the article.
