Pretty much just leave stock with the sponge on bottom and the bag of biomax on top. The bag of carbon is saved for if it is ever needed. I do however cut the sponge in half lengthwise and then stack the two halves in the filter. Halves make for much easier cleaning of the sponges.

On my turtle tank I even keep the heater in it. Has worked perfect for 8 months now and the ac110 is 8+ years old.

Bio media on Bottom and mid with sponge on top for easy cleaning. I just shake up the Bio when Im cleaning the Sponge
I have 2 AC 500's which is the original version of the AC 110 and run the sponge on the bottom and Bio Media above it.
