I don't know how much python's cost, but my DIY ended up costing about $30 for the hose and fittings.

Don't take my word for it, but if i remember correctly i paid like $60 for a 50' python, and then $10 for a syphon with a big tube and put that on my python.

They are a syphon hooked to a rubber hose that attachs to your sink so you can drain straight in to your sink then push up the attachment and fill the tank up.

Living in FL I have a lot of chlorine/chloramine in my tap water, so what I do is fill 6 of those 5gallon water jugs with tap water and Tetra Dechlorinator or Prime... then to make sure all the chlorine evaporates and the water gets close to proper temp, I let the jugs sit over night. I then siphon 30g of water out with the gravel vac (not to vac, but to pick up Oscar poo). Next I pour the 30g of prepped water into the tank. After that I sit down and have a Beer. Then I move on to the next tank.

omg this sounds perfect. i knew there was a better way!!

My wife used one of those tank-to-sink\sink-to-tank jobbies last summer whilst I was away for 7 months, It doesn't work for me, besides I like doing it the bucket way....

I set up 5 5g buckets in a row in front of the tank(75g).
I then siphon into the buckets while vacuuming most of the gravel.
Then I use 3 food safe buckets for refilling, while adding the proper dechlor
into each bucket before letting the water fill the bucket. I have one filling while I'm dumping the full one.
Right now the coldest my tap water gets is 80*F, which is perfect to the tank
temp.... I also use a pH buffer every W\C...
 ;)

I use a Aqueon hose, it is cheaper than a python and does a good job. I start the siphon with the sink and once it starts I shut off the water off and let gravity/siphon do the work. Once about 20% is drained I turn on the sink again to to get more suction and siphon any poo off the sand. After that is finished stop the siphon and add a cap or two of prime to the tank and let it circulate for a few minutes, then I adjust the temp from the fauset and begin filling with the Aqueon. I have heave chloramines and never have any troubles doing this way for several years changing large volumes of water at time. Sure is a lot easier than buckets and 'aging" water
