How do you figure this tank was built?

That looks like aluminum angle to me. Maybe it is just stuck onto the tank as a trimming after building it and serves no structural purpose at all. merely for aesthetics?

I don't think so. The 2 metal bracings across the surface are structural and need to be attached to a solid frame.
