A great example of how to kill your fish. High protein = lots of fat and unhealthiness.

I love comments like this. You have no idea how often I feed or how much. Fish get mostly protein in the wild and if you read the mix of other food I give them then you would see that they get Hikari Cichlid staple as well. When a fish is young it needs the extra protein to help with growth, once it has reached maturity the lack of growth causes the metabolism to slow down and therefore the fish needs much less food. Look up what massivore is mostly.

Bottom line protein is excellent for growth, if the fish is not growing then protein should be reduced.

While that is true enough Chris, this part of your comment also caught my attention.

I feed him a lot of "trout chow"

Trout chow is typically also very high in crude fat, so much so that most fish classified as omnivores (and even those classified as carnivores) will often end up with heavy fat deposition in their liver. This will happen even with very juvenile fish that do have higher metabolisms, and do require more protein/fat than a fish in their adult stage of life. While trout chow will definitely produce great gains in overall growth, that growth comes with some serious baggage that in many cases can lead to premature death in a fish.

Good to know thanks! I was more upset about the way he worded it than anything. I don't feed trout chow as my staple it's just a few pellets here and there, to be honest I feed more earthworms than trout chow. My staple is Hikari Cichlid staple. Varied diet is my policy!

Also I'm curious what makes trout chow high in fat? I was told it is ground fish similar to flakes but in pellet form?

Trout chow is formulated for fish destined for human consumption, its only goal is for large, quick gains in growth, with little to no concern about longevity. Fish primarily utilize fat for energy, and high fat content means that none of the much more expensive protein (fish meal) is going to energy use, only growth. It's a low cost feed designed for one goal, quick growth. Unfortunately in an effort to "pump 'em up" many FH keepers are doing more harm than good, and IMO this is one of the reasons that we see many cases of sudden death syndrome in FH's.
Weak genetics & a poor diet doesn't usually result in a happy ending.

i believe i heard that the lower the ph the more color they develop & the higher the ph causes the kok to get bigger. It has alot to do with genetics the environment, if you divide your tank w/2 males, diet, breeding, dominance, and im sure alot more. But i would say genetics play a big part and also the type of flowerhorn.

I totally agree.are you into fh for a long time?
