HOW DO YOU JUSTIFY THE EXTRA COST?

I have an aquatop cf 400 with uv. The aquatop canister has only been around for I think 6 years. I've had mine for only 8 months. I know that's really not long enough for a review but I will say I have had no problems. I have dealt with aquatop service reps on a matter with a heater and they were very nice and the matter was settled with one email.

Oh, again my point is for the cost differance. For example the Eheim 2262 or 2080 is what $400 or $450 with Media? The Fluval FX5 is almost $300. if you get good media. Whats the Aquatop $150 with Media? And in the end is the Eheim realy filtering that much better for the price difference? And in this case both the Eheim and the Aquatop are just examples I could use Rena and Sun Sun etc. I think that whoever makes the Sun Sun markets under seems like quite a few brand names. And in my case I'm using your input to decide what to do? Sorry, I'm told all the time I'm just a flatout pain in the ???:naughty:

I have had eheims for over a few decades and have never yet had to use their warranty. Only thing I have had to ever replace is the main o-ring for the canister. I have an old second hand eheim I got back in 1984 that's still running. Sorry I can't help you on the support side of things since I have never had to use it. :D It's to early to really know how long these inexpensive filters will last, but if I was short on cash I wouldn't mind picking up one, especially if your just starting out and don't want to invest a huge amount of money into your setups.

I belive Aquatop, sunsun, and Grech are all the same fitler just marketed under different names. Aquatop is the best known and most expensive for some reason.

It's easy for me to justify spending 400 on a 2262 when I figure the filter will last 15-20 years. You can buy a $200 cheapo filter, but the odds are good that you'll end up buying at least 2 or 3 in that timeframe. In the long run, I believe that it actually saves money to buy quality equipment

lol you just about have to!

I have an Aquatop and I have a Fluval FX5, and they both do great but there seems to be a huge difference in quality. The Aquatop seems much cheaper. But it does it's job and I haven't had any problems. I've also had zero complaints about the FX5. If I had to deal with garbage customer service I'd be a bit upset also. If Hagens customer service has proven to be crap, get a refund and buy an Eheim. They have a great reputation so that's what I'd be doing if i was in your shoes. Good luck.

I thought your fx5 "leak" was just caused by a sharp edge inside a hose clamp. or did u find another larger problem subsequent to that?
Waiting for a refund or entire replacement seems like alot of hassle if all you need is a smooth clamp & maybe some hose-if that... I don't know how much of that hose got wrecked.

I understand that you're dissatisfied about the "fine print" & customer service.. and I'd be really aggravated about a leak.

but in the end, everybody's product opinions are subjective. it's kind of like 'whatever floats your boat', and how lucky people get with various name brands.
something can go wrong with almost anything... & customer service Reps' attitudes, at the moment you call, are just a crap shoot.
I don't have any huge biases. I'm a relative noob to Lg tanks & still learning about the pros & cons of brands.
I also have decisions to make for my new 180G. was gonna get fx5. now kind of debating other eheims.
Money does play into it, but ease of use & reliability is bigger to me. because if I can't operate something & have to trouble-shoot, I'll usually have to figure it out when my husband is gone. and, as he says: "you bang on things, and wrench them too hard".
Duh.
EQUIPMENT RAGE. LOl. I am not mechanical.

Agreed

you get what you pay for and just like my ac110 thats over 8years old, it lasts cuz its well built. Never even replaced anything.

I would say if you have the extra money to spend the 100$ more and get the fx5, aquatops are inexpensive for a reason, they are cheaply built, therefore the price is cheap. You just can't match the quality of the pump, the built in micro chip, backflow and capacity of the fx5.

Sometimes worth paying extra for the good name , as a company will stand by their product, fluval has cus svc locations all around the world. They provided me with 10 locking clamps gratis for my 5 fx5s, retail $8.99 ea. That's $89 worth of parts sent to me for free, the filters are over 4 years old with no warranty. Yes the parts were made in China but paying for the quality name has other benefits.

So let me ask you Eheim folks have had good support from Eheim? I've read iffy things about there support in the US this could just be a rumor but I rad somewhere that Eheim has no major repair facility in the US.

Now I'm realy going to need that Helmet!!!!!
Did you ever think that maybe there is no major Eheim repair center in the US because their products don't break that often. LOL!

Wow that's awesome. I couldn't be happier with my fx5! How is your media configured? I've heard of people stuffing bio in the sides?
