HOW DO YOU LOWER ph??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
PH seems to be less important than steady parameters. PH is a function of KH or Gh. If I'm right you can't separate them. Control your KH, which will be the ability to buffer, then try to lower the GH which will mean softer water. Peat, wood, or any acid will change the parameters to lower when used properly. It confuses me sometimes. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Just hit your LFS today and buy a hardness test kit. It will be less than $10. Depending on how hard your water is will different methods for pH reduction will need to be used. For example, if you water is really hard you will need to buy an R/O. But, if it is soft water, the addition of some acid will lower your pH easily.

You may not be ready to breed discus. You need to develop the basics of discus husbandry, then you can breed them.

You didn't hear this from me, and don't blame me if you kill your fish, but I have always used white vinegar the lower the ph in a system. It is also great for cleaning water spots and old tanks.

With respect to discus, you are facing two issues...pH and water hardness. Regarding KH and GH, technically, only KH is relevant with respect to pH. Since discus prefer soft, low-pH water, I am inclined to agree with those who have suggested the use of an RO system. You can attempt to manage the pH and hardness with additives, etc., but this will be far more complex and subject to failure than simply using RO water. On the other hand, I have never had discus, but I am told that the captive-bred varieties are often quite hardy and tolerant of water conditions. It may be that with declhorination and the use of wood/peat your water will be suitable. Bear in mind, that with discus, you will be performing water changes FREQUENTLY.
