how do you lower water temperature?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Same situation in Chicago. I just turned off my heaters and the tank stayed at a steady temperature ~80.

My heaters are useless during the summer.

I was going to say the same thing as skools717 said just in a larger amount. You dont want to rush it cause that would shock them. Or you can refrigerate some tank water and do a slight water change. But im sure you dont want your fridge nothing but tank water. lol Good luck

its not efficient to do the water cubes. They showed this on a reef forum. It doesn't work well.

What works very well is evaporative cooling from using fans.

If you have the money, then a chiller.

But try using fans, blowing at the top of the tank, it will lower the temps really well. Also turn down the amount of time you hvae your lights on and unplug your heater.

turn off your lights, unplug the heater, and have a large fan. This will work.

You will need to topoff the tank for evaporation more than before though

I agree! I have to keep my fish in the garage right now and it really sucks. It got up to 97 in there the other day. I have been doing the frozen water bottles, fans, and no lights, and it makes a huge difference. Those lights can jack up the temp fast, so definitely keep them off. I've been doing the whole fan thing for the last month, but, with the bump in temperature and the really long days, it really wasn't enough. I have eels in the 180 so that has to stay totally sealed so all that I can have open is the sump. Basically, with 280 gallons, I'm going through about 10lbs (or more) of ice a day and barely keeping it at 82. My freezer has officially been relinquished to the fish containing fish food and ice with the occasional frozen beer mug to keep the rest of this tolerable. ;)
