How do you make a Micropeltes eat something other than feeders??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'd say yes, If it's accustom to live prey then you may need to use chopped frozen meaty foods as a stepping stone, but once they get the hang of grabbing food as it sinks to the bottom/hits the surface instead of hunting it then they will quickly stop looking before they grab at food and will eat just about anything you chose.

I also find fish , and most animals, eat better on a schedule . If you always feed at the same time of day and establish a routine then it's easier to switch them from one food to another. They quickly learn when it's "feeding time" making anything that hits the water food.

ok, but in the mean time while i starve it do I need to worry about my micro cheating on his diet and eating the oscar of pleco. Both are about 5-6" smaller than my micro

Plexo does not seem an option....

i had a 12incher and an 18inch micro in with a 9inch african pike and they never attempted to eat him... the 18 had a fight and got beat by the 12 so i moved him in my community with loadsa small cichlids an he was fine for the few weeks he was in there. ive read they have to be trained to take on stuff to large to swallow, for example being fed larger feeders gradually... each is different tho! my two were both picky we i got them, i fed feeders for a while to the 12 incher then stuck with some advise to starve, starved the 18 inch one from the begining and both were eating mussels in a week or two if i remember rightly.... i got rid of them to grow a 6 inch one with my cichlids the end of october, he's 10inch plus now, eating loads although no pellets... good luck.

plexo?? plexiglass divider? lost me there miguel?

All fish especially aggressive predatory fish will be more aggressive when hungry. So I would keep an eye on them, with larger pleco's and oscars he's not likly going to eat them but he may get cranky and beat on them and maybe kill them in the process so watch for increased aggression.

With that said, it's probably only a matter of time before he turns on those tank mates and kills them any way. Micro like most Channa are best kept alone more often then not they will eventually kill tankmates. I've seen many people (and been guilty of it myself) think they've got that "exception to the rule" because there keeping snake heads in mixes without issue, but in the end it seems that all snake heads eventually hit a point in their maturity/size/age where they suddenly, and often over night will becomes incredibly territorial and then completely destroy tankmates bigger/smaller/same size it doesn't matter they seem to just one day decide the want to be alone and will rip apart tank mates.

Micro's especially are known for this, Most start off playing nice then suddenly you wake up one morning and everything else is dead....

let them starve, dont let them stress, but mine "toman snakehead" eat nearly everything now after it switch from feeder to frozen shrimp and fish i buy from market, it eat frogs, crickets, lizards etc. maintain your water temperature and conditions, dont let ur "baby" stress, feed it little by little..have more patience, cause in the end they will eat everything, like my dad always said, "INVASIVE MACHINE"
