How do you Make a plastic tub into a pond?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
How big is the fish?

If small...

Get a heavy duty tub or reinforce the cheaper ones with a frame.

Get a water testing kit.

Get one of these http://www.aquariumguys.com/microclean1.html for each tub involved. if these are just temp. or a sponge filter http://www.aquariumguys.com/hydrosponge2.html and an air pump http://www.aquariumguys.com/renaairpump.html or a powerhead http://www.aquariumguys.com/penguin660.html

This is the heater holder http://www.aquariumguys.com/ebojager6.html

Heater size depends on external room temp.

The fish will be 4 inches when I put him in, and 6 when full grown.

I kicked the tub and streched it and it seemed pretty solid, but I'll see if there is anything better, it isn't like these things cost a ton.

I already have a great water testing kit that I use for checking my other tanks.

Than thank you for the advice about the filter, sponge pump, e.t.c.

I already have a great scilent air pump and I think I'll get an other one of those.

Here are the sizes of the bin.

It is 19 inches side to side. It is about 20 inches front to back, and 15 inches deep.

That's 24g to the top, so maybe 22g usable. If you have aSam
s club near you I picked up some reat 50g or 55g tubs that barely bow when full and have been in service for several years (I just bought some more so they still have them). They have little black wheels that you just pop out for heavy stuff.

There is a calculator at the top of the page under conversions to help you out too.

Good to hear that you have the test kit already :headbang2.

Thanks I am sure I got a bigger bucket, I a have a bunch of junk. I'll just empty it out.
The test kit I have I really like, and use often.

I had a coffee table that I turned into a pond many years ago. I used a bin like you are saying and a regular filter. This might give you a few more ideas. It was stronger using the table as support. Think bigger - dinning room table as the lid. GO wild. I currently have a 200 gallon pond in the basment. I bought a square plstic pond and built a wooden box around it. Have fun.

Well actually my rainbowsharks really like each other. It happened recently when I turned the airstones off.

the only thing when using a rubbermaid to watch out for is the strength of the sides when you put water in them. they are not made to withstand a full load of water pressing out on them. the more rigid forms with moldings in the sides do alot better.
