How do you make a profit from breeding?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I know i got a store near me that gives me credit for breeding. So i can get supplies and stuff. Like i can get new tanks wit enough credit. So if u find on elike that it might help. And u can also sell online to others.

He could have two tanks & produce something?
Say a pair of Daffodil birchardi or a pair of Julis Transcriptus etc. in a 10-15 gallon & fry can live with the parents for a couple months then place the 1/2" in a 20 gallon & within 6-8weeks have 1"+ fry & get $1.50-$3ea. sell 50 or so a month? A good start. Or sell on Aquabid? Craigs list not sure if the mom would like strangers coming over to buy 1 fish or so? If you get a LFS to buy a couple dozen for a price you will move more quicker freeing up the grow out tank. Heck I seen many use $4 rubbermade totes for grow outs!
Believe me I have been there & done that. My mom complained especially when I was up to 33 tanks in the house. I used the excuse I could be out buying beer & smokes or buy fish? Got $5 to buy fish everytime! lol.

Now I'm old & tell the woman I could be at the bar or the other kind & blow more dough then on fish.

Ive looked at past threads how does killifish sound? I got 2 batches of convict fries that i never bothered to really try to sell. Ive been using them as feeders lol but should i bother even trying to sell em for a buck each?

Killies i'm not a pro on but rarely sold in stores?
Cons not worth in demand. I take a bucket full for free once in while & use half to feed off. Some of the smaller CAs stores can get cheap from the farms.
Something else that is in is Crystal Shrimp & rare crayfish. I'm actually raising bumble bees, cherry shrimp. Fairly easy & a heater is not always needed. I breed them in 5 gallon tanks along with some fancy guppys & long fin white clouds.

First, your LFS is going to have to be willing to buy your "product" this can be a feat in itself.
Second, It sounds like your mom is not going to go for it.
Third, this is not as easy as it sounds.

You might want to wait for your own place.

Good luck however you decide to proceed.

I was getting my weekly lecture from my mom about how keeping all these fish tanks were a waste of money and how i should keep only one... yadayadayada.. Then my mom mentioned "If you can make money out of this then i wouldn't be talking". Then something hit me. Can't I make money breeding fish and selling them to local people and fish stores? So I was curious for you experienced people what kind of fish can breed and make me some money? How should i do this, appropiate tanks, etc? And lastly where and how would i approach selling them? to tell you the truth would this even work out? If anyone can help thanks

I've pondered this idea to. Then I found out my LFS's wont even give me store credit for fish. :irked:

Guppies and red cherry shrimp can be bred in massive numbers with few small tanks, as long as there are tons and tons of java moss.

lets see, you can breed, guppies, octopi, mandarin dragonets(yes its possible), clownfish, frag coral, hermit crabs(land), cichlids, mollies.

you won't make money on it. Trust me, keeping fish for 35 years and bred a lot of species. Never intended to make money on it but if you just do the figures on electricity, food, etc. you'll see that it all adds up
