How do you measure a fish?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Most of us measure length. If you want you could measure more than the length(thickness and tallness too). Also welcome to MFKs!:D

There are several ways to measure a fish. Most people on here are doing Total Length (TL). That is from the mouth to the end of the tail. It generally does not include tail filaments, such as a firemouth or flowerhorn etc. In the case that the fish has a deeply forked tail, you could measure from the mouth to the inside of the fork. This is known as fork length (FL) and is generally used on sportfish species or anything with a deeply forked tail, Bala Sharks come to mind. The "tall" measurement would be height which is a rare fish measurement. The "width" measurement would be the girth. Girth is generally measured by wrapping a measuring tape or string around the widest and tallest part of the fish. As you see, girth covers width and height, which is why height is rarely used. With the TL and girth measurements, accurate weight estimates can be made.

Measure however you see fit, it's nice to keep a log of each measurement you take with dates to see how fast your fish are growing!

I have always called it from the tip of the snout to the tip of the tail, not including any streamers or fin extensions. No need to make things complicated
