I recently purchased a 75g tank and i want to blackout the background. What materials should i use and how should i go about doing this if at all possible.

latex paint cannot seep through glass

use spray paint. I taped the sides and trim and cardboard over the top so i would not paint the inside of the tank by mistake.

mask off the trims and wipe with some windex to get the oils off the glass and roll 3 coats, 4 to be sure 10-15 mins between each coat depending on temp. Peel tape off when the paint is wet. You'll be fine. When it drys and you don't want it black anymore just peel the whole layer of paint off. Good Luck!

If latex will seep into the tanks the the water will be leaking from that tank. haha

why not use black paper as a background instead of buying paint? and then take it off when you want to and its cheaper.

Because when you get water on the paper/the fish splash, it gets ruined. If you decide to change it (the paint) a razor blade will take it right of.
Plus a 1/2-1 quart of paint doesn't cost but a couple of bucks.
I used a roller with three coats.
