How do you pellet train your fish?

I am having the exact same problem with my 2 cichilids right now. I cant get them to feed off the surface AT ALL.... tried pellets/shrimp to no avail. Im goin to try and space out their reg feedings of bloodworms/slight flakes, try and force the lil *cough* into eating the pellets.

LoL just noticed how old this thread was. Well it helped me out anyways =))

Why do you want them to feed at top? Any specific reason? It's perfectly normal for fish to eat at the bottom. JW

I picked up some Hikari Cichlid Gold as recommended by my LPS.

I wanted to get them used to it *not because he told me its best for their colors even tho that would be nifty*

But because im a freedive spearfishing addict and I try and go at least twice a year.

Auto feeder=No little brother having girls over at my house while im gone.

I dont even have a feeder yet, and not planning on going till early spring then late august next year.

I feed my cichlids floating pellets(Hikari cichlid excel) at first it was as if they were completely oblivious to the things floating around but soon enough one went up and grabbed one and the others soon followed.

Now it seems whenever i go up to the tank they are all waiting by the surface for food and those that don't i usually just start with my hand at the bottom of the tank (on the outside) and move it up to the top, thy all look up and go for the food lol. The things we do for our animals lolz.

I also feed them sinking spirulina wafers, mainly for my Synodontis but the cichlids have a good nibble on it too.

cheers-

Darren

Do as Neo said.

Get them on krill, beefheart or something of that short.

Gradually mix in the pellets.

Gradually take away the meaty foods.

And that usually does it

Sorry about the round about answer, but yes I was reply'n to your question about "why worry about feeding them things that float. a.k.a dehydrated shrimp/pellets etc.

The pellets that I have ALL float... hence my mention of getting them to feed off the surface.

My fish were ONLY eating flakes/bloodworms etc that would sink down.

Update: Looks like I have one of the two on pellets now and the other one is starting to try them atm. Hopefully they will both be used to them within the next day or so.

So hopefully mission accomplished.
