How do you pick your fish when you buy them?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
1) type that will have an even chance in my tank without causing much riots
2) Size compatibility
3) free from terminal and communicable disease that could cause an extinct event
4) gender compatibility.
5) I don't like hyper dominant ones but I will let the runts die in someone else's tank rather than my own.

Depends on the fish. Like others have said above if its a individual fish. But if its a small tetra or other small fish that I may buy 6-20 of them If there all mostly healthy looking I don't pick each one. I just tell the person catching them not to catch any that look sick. I buy a lot of fish online so you don't always get to pick the best one. You get what you get.

the less I know about a species the more I'm intreagued... if its something i haven't seen before outside of the net or a book if i think I can care for it in my current tanks i will take the chance.. if i know diddly about it i go home and research it and go from there. as far as fish for my daughts comm tank or cleanup crew species... pick the healthiest looking fish.. period. color and size come with good care ime.

Health is first and foremost! No clamped fins, discolorations, or visible parasites. Behaviour is next and what is appropiate for that species. Then I look for unique qualities next like exceptional friendly behaviour, unique or great coloration, or above average fins or early puberty in young fish. Then the deal or price but that can come in second if it is exceptional!

If there aren't too many of them I usually just buy all of them. No need to choose that way. Otherwise I mainly go by size/colour. Or it it happens to catch my eye.

My fish pick me. No but seriously my wife usually finds something she likes and I have to make it happen. On occasion I will buy a fish just to rescue it from the tank it is in. Most of my fish come from other hobbyist.
