No... it is a nickname. There are not many plecos being sold that are true plecostomus. They are technically loricariids, not "plecos."smpage;3979690; said:I wouldn't call it a "nickname." It's just a shortened version of the word plecostomus. Calling a Plecostomus a "Playco" is like calling someone named Nicholas "nayk."
cchhcc said:Since the name is based on Plecostomus, using the latin pronunciation (which is the basis for most scientific names; the rest being greek or modified versions of either) the correct pronunciation would be........wait for it........
PLECK-O

Also, the english 'a' and the 'e' in other languages are phonetically similar in some cases, 'a' and 'i' aren't.![]()
Was I not? Lighten up... You said it wasn't a nickname, and I disagreed.smpage;3986010; said:The example of "nicholas" was just an example of the absurdity.
Also, I would definitely say it's not a nickname. We aren't discussing whether or not all plecos on the market are true plecos, we're discussing how to pronounce the word pleco.
^^^ What he said. It drives me nuts when people say/spell it "placo".Columbian Shark Catfish;3978011; said:Plecko, cuz it's pronounced pleckostomus.

Thankfully, the english language has successfully bastardized the proper pronunciation of almost everything so it really doesn't matter how you pronounce Pleco!
