The main reason i use tank water in my QT tank is to go ahead and acclimate the fish to the water conditions of my current tanks, it can sometimes be stressful to less hardy fish to go through 3 different types of water with different conditions over that short of a period of time, just my opinion, and it's just as easy as filling with new water.

You're right -- it certainly doesn't hurt. In situations where you modify your tank's water (i.e. by adding a buffer or something), I agree that this is probably the best way to go. However, I just don't see it as totally necessary. To each his (or her) own! :D

If you wish to quarantine, do it for 3-4 weeks. I would not suggest moving the fish into your main tank in less than 3 weeks unless you are sure your fish is free from possible pathogens that may be fatal to your other stocks. Watch out for flukes, costia, ich, bacterial infections, external and internal parasites. All these are very common.

Wow! All of my questions were just answered. thanks guys. And to the person who asked what I am trying to quarantine, I just am getting started in breeding wild type guppies.

I'm not sure if they have answered your question or not but frommy observation it seems like your asking a bit of a different question then theyre answering. they explained the quartentine process but your question seems different ..

Quarentine tank is meant to avoid bringing diasesed fish etc into your new tank with potentially important fish .. quartentine helps because if u see the fish getting sick etc you can treat him in that tank without having to treat your whole (bigger) tank. it seems like your looking for tips on how to keep them alive more then about the actual quarentine process.

acura thanks. I basically needed the process. If all that entails is separating new fish for a week in a cycled tank, than thats good enough for me. I though you were supposed to medicate them with something, like methon(something) blue and salt, no?

It is simple you get a tank that is setup and cycled properly and Use it only as a temporary tank and when you get new fish you put them in that tank for a few days and after those few days if your fish is still looking good and show no signs of sickness then you put them in its final tank that has your other fish in it
i agree :headbang2

Actually, it's three to four weeks. I think I explain in my post what you're supposed to do. LOL I spent like ten minutes typing all that and gathering the links... there's no reason to say it all over again! :D

only medicate if your fish show signs that it needs to me medicated, thats the reason in the 3 to 4 weeks of QT time, the only other reason for early medication is when buying a large batch of feeder fish from somewhere and pre medicating because they will almost always have a parasite or infection or both, as a safety precaution.
