Thought of one more. Stay out of the fish stores! :D Whenever I go to a fish shop it gets me thinking of another set up.

I maintain a 50+ room fishroom for remarkably little money by:

1) Running the room on a couple of large air pumps and only using heaters where necessary (a few tanks).
2) Overhead lighting, which is only on (except for a single 14W bulb) when I'm in the fishroom.
3) Buying food in bulk from places like Kensfish.com and YourFishStuff. Skipping feeding at least 1 day per week.
4) Raising live red wiggler worms and replacing at least one feeding of prepared food per week with them.
5) Buying Chloram-X in bulk from Kensfish.com for water changes
6) Not buying anything except when absolutely necessary from LFS, Petsmart or other retailers

And last but not least, being a member of a local fish club!

This is very true! When we are tighter on money I try not to go to the LFS or even Petsmart.

At how many fish tanks in a fishroom does it become cheaper to heat the whole room do you think?

I went to a pet store, told them I wanted to work for them.
Promised to improve their aquarium room, since they didn't have time taking good care of it.

Boss was so satisfied he gave me a brand new 190 gallon tank and fluval fx6.
And i get to buy and order what ever I want for myself from the makers and fish farms for the same price the store orders them for.

Pretty sweet deal, and I love working here.
I could never afford the tank i have with all it has.

Norway in general is very expensive, and I've calculated what it would cost for a customer to set up a identical tank as mine, and i've passed 12 000 USD.

Edit:
What I've actually paid is not even close.

I bought a lightly used 180g set-up with an FX5 from a buddy in my fish club for, I think, $400 a couple of years ago. He threw in a 55g and a bunch of other stuff for the trouble.

Because I was buying it from someone I know (and not some random Craigslist grifter), I was confident that the tank wasn't a leaker and that all of the equipment worked (and it does).

One of a million reasons to become an active, contributing member of a local aquarium club!

I'm a little worried about getting large tanks used, I like to have warranty and feel confident that it is going to last me a while.
Same goes with expensive equipment.

There is one local fish club where I live.

I've tried to go there for the last 6 months, but I never had the chance to go due to work or some commitment elsewhere.

I think the main benefit of working here, besides getting stuff cheap, is the fact that if i'm curious of a fish or product, I set up a tank for just that purpose, that way i learn on my own.

There is very little information on a species of fully aquatic crabs that is relativley new to the hobby.
And after having them in the store for a month I learned quite a bit, what they like to eat, what is compatible with them and etc.

I ended up getting 3 for myself, and they live happily in my nano tank.
And they are now very popular and customers like them.
