how do you tell oscars sex?

Many people have theories, but honestly there's no way to sex them until you see them breeding.......

The only sure way is to wait until you get a breeding pair so you can see which one lays eggs

observation man, its the only way. Wait untill one starts laying eggs, then you have one known female. Usually she will pair up with a male but somtimes you get girl on girl action. So just watch carefully and you will find out who is what.

To all who think it's impossible unless they lay eggs, well ur wrong. There is a way to sex them, and it's by venting them ( looking at the genital papillae ) the problem is u have to take em out of water to vent them.
I have always used this method to find out sex of all my american cichlids and im always right.

Le sigh, the reason people don't say that is because the normal hobbyist will try venting and could possibly end up hurting the fish. And even venting doesn't yield 100% results to the untrained eye..........
