How does a fish know his own kind?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
you think too much :P

Let's say mirror hasn't been invented and if you are a black person and tried to shoal with a group white people what will happen? What if you are a white person and tried to hang out with a group black people what will happen?

You probably stick up like a sore thumb and get a weird vibe from the dominate group. That's the same with fish. The fish standing out will know he is shoaling with the wrong school after being rejected one too many times.

The less human-like intelligence an animal has, the more instinct it has. Hormones (recognizing them) would be part of that instinct, too.

People can look down at their hands. I doubt this is the cause, as animals of lesser intelligence don't have self awareness. If you put them in front of a mirror, they think it's just another fish (which is why bettas and flowerhorns, and any other aggressive fish, flare up at their reflections).

You are missing the point. Let's say you are a black person and you look at your hands and say so what the color of skin is no big deal, then you go hanging around with a white crowd, until you get told that you are different that you are attracting predators such as lions and hyenas to the crowd, that you are not blending in and the group is in jeopardy. The dominate group will make sure to let you know that you are different than them.

While I understand your point and it's fairly valid...that's a ****ing terrible analogy.

Except that fish don't have self awareness. They don't know what they look like (and not just because they can't "look down" at their hands). Their thought processes are nowhere near that.

So ur saying black people get Eatin by lions  I haven't been kicked out yet am (half) black and my frens don't kick me out lol I know what u mean, but I wouldn't think thatd the soul reason

So you don't think this albino deer has self awareness? What about the group if it has a collective awareness that they know they have an albino within them?

We were talking about fish. Deer are mammals, who, for the most part, have higher level thought processes. I am not aware of any experiments regarding self awareness performed on deer, so I cannot definitively say, but I believe they may not have self awareness.

If anyone has any pet deer, please do us a favor. Place a mirror with your deer for the day. The next day, paint a spot of a bright color somewhere in the deer, and when it sees itself in the mirror, see if it seems interested in the spot and tries to reach for it on its own body.
