how does a stingray strike?

I got hit by a freshwater ray fishing while trying to get my hook back and its not fun. They say hot water as hot as you cant take without burning yourself if possible in my situation it wasn't. Like getting hit with a sledge hammer and having things just start to go numb. Anyways overnight at the hospital and some meds everything worked out, and have a cool story now. would not want to do it again though
I have been stung twice, both times on the right hand. The first time I reached into the tank to recover a chunk of shrimp I was hand feeding to my ray up the side of the glass, another fish in the tank knocked the shrimp out of my hand and without thinking I reached in and tried to pick up the shrimp. Unlucky for me the shrimp landed next to the ray's tail and it spooked when I went in to get it. The very tip of the stinger went into the side of my finger and hit the bone. The pain was instant all the way up to my arm pit. Lasted about 5hrs. Went to hospital just in case. The second time I was in a rush right after getting home from work, saw my big 20" female motoro (she now resides in a 1500gal tank in Aurora ILL. I believe he is a member. She was sold to a differant member who resold her.) flowting at the top of the tank thought she was dead, poked her got no responce reached in to pull her forward so I could remove her from the tank she took off for the bottom of the tank and in the process put a very large spike right thru my middle finger. I pulled back hard and the spike ripped out of my finger and left a big gash, back to the hospital I went. The morale to the story is don't put your hand where it don't belong. Just need to stay away from the back half of your ray and always think before you put a hand into a tank with a ray in it.
