How does Big Al's conditioner compare to Prime?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Don't get me wrong, I love Bigalsonline but Seachem Prime is a far better value compared to Big Als Water Conditioner.

Example:
(Pricing is quoted from bigalsonline.com 02/19/2008)

Seachem Prime- 500 ml Our Price: $10.99
Treats 5000 gallons.

Big Al's Multi-Purpose Water Conditioner- 64OZ.Our Price: $14.99Discount: -$2.00 (Save 13%) Sale Price:$12.99
Treats 2000 gallons

You can treat 5000 gallons for $10.99 with Prime but pay $12.99 to treat 2000 gallons with Big Al's conditioner.

Big Al's Conditioner would cost 2.5 times as much to treat equal amount of water.

$12.99 x 2.5= $32.48

For $29.99 you can buy the two liter bottle of Prime which will treat 20,000 gallons. BigAl's would now cost $2.50 more than Prime to treat only 5000 gallons. See what I mean? And the saving is greater the larger the size. A 4 liter jug of Prime is their best value.

In conclusion, Big Al's Water conditioner will cost more money but at least it's an inferior product.

I use Big Al's water conditioner in the doses reccomended for Prime with no problems. The main problem is most conditioners over reporting the required amounts in order to sell more and more water conditioner. From what I've been told by the chemists it is pretty difficult to make dechlorinators more concentrated :).

If you simply want to dechlorinate then use Sodium Thiosulphate. Either as a crystal or mix up your own stock solution. Any pool shop or chemical supply place will have it.

Thanks guys. I didn't realize the dosages were that much different. Prime it is.

Wow, where can you get a 2L bottle for $30? I might have to drive down to the States to pick some up.
Big Al's Canada lists 2L for $67CAD but on their American site it's 4L for $57USD. They're screwing us Canadians big time.

Anyways, Prime is still the most economical.
