Hey guys, I was wondering how do people move tanks of such heavy weight (30+) around your house without un cycling them or killing the fish from stress. I'm asking this because I'm in the process of finally making a fish room but it will be about 1.5 until it's finished (BIG room!) and by then I will probably have another tank (getting a 55 of my buddy possibly) meaning I will have three fully established, cycled, mature tanks that will need moved without damaging the bacteria, fish, or plants in them.

also, when I get my own place in say 6 to 8 years I plan on bringing ALL of my tanks with me which will vary in gallons from 30-220! How am I supposed to do essentially the same thing I asked above without destroying to much bacteria or killing fish, as well as transferring water. My new place will more than likely be within 20 minutes of where I am living now with 5-10 being more likely but that is still a HIGH stress situation for both me and the fish.

Unless there acrylic tanks EVERYTHING must be removed however on the smaller tanks you may get by with leaving the gravel in

They are all glass, but will the bacteria survive that long without filtration? And how many buckets I will need is rediculous!

I used one of those blue plastic 55 gal drums and I went out and bought a brand new trash can. Saved about 100 gal. 3 5 gal bucket worth of sand. And I used one of those Rubbermaid tubs for the fish

smart, so now I know how to move them around the house but.......how about to a new place, it's not that easy to commute back and forth with 15, 5 gallon buckets.

This is the PITA part of being a fish keeper.

Haha, yeah I guess and people do it so I guess I will worry about that in 6 years when I need to.

thanks guys I'll Get more into questions when my fish room is done but until then I think I'm good!

Yup large heavy trash cans work great. I have used them multiple times. Thru filter media, heater and water pump or canister filters on them while in the process of moving tanks around.. I buy new cans though when I've done this. Never use the old ones that are funked up

I use a big lemon jucie tub normally ( they ship jucie in it ) and a 2000 otto to keep everything going. I have also just left it outside for a few hours will ill effect but the sponges and all remained in the sump.

As for moving them I maybe not the best to take advice from In this area.. but I use a trolley that can be jacked up to the stand height plus some suction cups I can move pretty much all my tanks this way alone as I am just sliding them or lifting them up on the stand. Ideally a second person is much more simple but not always easy. As for the fish during the move I would look into aquaculture stock tanks depending on your stock levels. I also never fully remove media or gravel from tanks if moving within room and no issues so far just more weight... I do get told the tanks can spilt from the extra weight but I will wait and see with that one.i cant see 10mm plus glass just giving out over a few kg of course if using trolley not an issues as the base remains supported during move.

Hope this helps some what.

When I moved 3 hrs away. All I really did was I put all the sand in a 5 gal bucket and kept it submersed with tank water just to the top of the sand. I used a bunch of large coolers to put all my fish in with about half of the tank water with air bubblers running for the whole trip. kept all my bio-wheels submersed. All fish made it fine, some lost their colors but eventually settled down after a few weeks. As far as tanks go I just made all my bro-n-laws carry them. That's the benefits of having 6 bro-n-laws!
