How does one move large tanks around?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
When I moved 3 hrs away. All I really did was I put all the sand in a 5 gal bucket and kept it submersed with tank water just to the top of the sand. I used a bunch of large coolers to put all my fish in with about half of the tank water with air bubblers running for the whole trip. kept all my bio-wheels submersed. All fish made it fine, some lost their colors but eventually settled down after a few weeks. As far as tanks go I just made all my bro-n-laws carry them. That's the benefits of having 6 bro-n-laws!

i made almost the same move. the coolers had thoes bait saver pumps with spray bars on them. it worked great. i had to set up a few tanks so i didnt get to them all at once. my africans lived in one for a few days just fine. the gravel stayed in buckets with water in them and same with the biomedia.

Another thing you will need is a huge supply of friends because after 1 or 2 tanks friends have a way of disappearing. You should worry about keeping your filter media happy as there is a huge amount of bacteria in that. How many tanks are you going to move and what sizes are we talking.

More than likely 4. Sizes will be 30, 55, 75, and 180

The only tank you have that will be a little hard to move is the 180. One person can move 30's and 50's by themselves. The 75 can be moved by 2 people and the 180 should have 4 people but 2 could do it. When you move I would keep your filters running in the tank as long as possible. Then take them complete to new local fill the tanks add water conditioner and hook up the filters and add some fish. Your filters should be able to last 3 to 4 hours safely without loosing to much of the bacteria. Good luck when you do move.
