i've noticed my L330 isn't that bothered with veggies  he is more interested in scraping off my bogwood, he does this all day and night long. he rarely eats veg - it will take him a week to eat half a carrot and didn't seem too bothered about cucumber when i threw it in. he eats meaty foods sparingly but goes absolutely mental on bogwood... is this normal behaviour?

im worried mine will be malnourished... dunno what to do if this isnt normal..

If the pleco isnt used to your tank.. (probably not since u recently got it) it will take some time before a royal learns that its food...

I've had royals before.. and they dont necessay eat bog wood.. although wood in general is key for royals...

I'd say give it a few days.. and make sure not to overdo the cucumbers.. it can result in death...

well so far i've only given him cucumber once - but why can it result in death?

Overfeeding.. Royals for some reason.. once they learn to eat veggies will actually eat them very quickly... to death...

It happened to me and i believe mod oddball.. His died from overfeeding on pumpkin... and it just died....

Mine did the samething this past weekend.. i fed it cucumber TWICE. 2 days in a row.. just half of a cucumber.. and next morning.. i found my royal floating up....

I dunno if its internal disease.. but its doubtful.. he was the only fish that died.. and i had another royal in there.. L90.. the one that died was L190, same with Oddballs...

I dunno if L330 is the same..... i certainly hope not...:(

Any new Royal takes time to adapt to a new enviroment, any other plecs in tank? They eat with they feel secure. My 330 loves yams, carrots. I placed them in a small bowl with a little water and let some bloodworm cubes thaw in with them. Placed yams in tank at night before going to bed....Success now he looks forward to his weekly yam:headbang2

Watch stools for a good indication he's healthy, firm and dark. Sunken eyes and stomach are a bad sign.... I usually worm my plecos right after purchase in a qt tank

wow... so sorry to hear about this... that must have been a terrible blow...

hmmm thats the last time i'm throwing in half of a whole carrot! guess from now on i will give him tiny portions of veg and not big chunks! good thing he was only eating a tiny bit of it each day.

How big was your royal? did he eat meaty foods?

I only buy organic veggies now, I had similar problems before.
Although they won't affect a 150 lb person most vegetables are raised in a bath of pesticides. Then covered with preservatives for transport. Trace pesticides might affect a pleco that barely weighs 5 oz’s. Since paying more for organically raised veggies I haven’t had a problem:popcorn:

well i haven't given my other L numbers i've had any organic fruit or veg if i don't have it in the house. normally i will peel the skin off anyway before feeding it because of pesticide issues because that's how i eat it at home so i just do the same for my plecs.

but i see your point about pesticides affecting a plec which is certainly smaller in size compared to a human. and especially how they aren't used to that sort of thing in the wild. maybe this is the problem?...
