how far from the tank is your 4' light?

I have the fixture sitting right on top of the glass lid.

Same....

I would like to have it elevated though. You get the cool "ripple" effect when the lighting is suspended above the tank.

I should be more specific. I have two 3" spanning the 6' tank right in front. Behind that is a 4' shop light from Home Depot (white) having that directly on top in the middle of the tank makes the tank bright but keeps the back-top corners dark---deemphasizing the intakes and overflows. I am fortunate enough not to have ever had an algae farm.
