how fast do bichirs grow??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Ive had senegals, del, endi and ornate.

Endi's grow the fastest by far. Del the slowest w/ the ornate and senegal about medium. Endli's went from 4"-12"+ in a year.

IME Fastest to slowest

Endli (2-3" a month for 6 months)
Senegal (1-2" a month for 8 months)
Ornate (1" a month till 12")
Del (Slow over one year 4")
Weeksii (Did it even grow?)
Moke (Yeah it's the same size)

Feed them 2-3 times a day, and change water twice a week. Some people do power feeding to their fish, what is the 1 bichir?

I got a male ornate at about 2 inches length around easter sunday this year (he was tiny and needed to be hospital netted till he got a little more girth). Once i let him into gen pop though he exploded. Within 3 months he was as big as my 6 inch sen (which i was afraid would eat him). Now he is sitting comfortably in the 8 inch range. I can definitely say ornates have an excellerated growth over other bichir (though endli may give him a run for his money). As the bichirs get bigger, they get braver with what they consider food. I introduced some clown loaches with my 5 inch endli, he immediately grabbed one in his jaws but has since left them alone. I would echo that you should plan to have at least a 75 gallon in the foreseeable future for the ornate at least, eventually getting a 125 or 150. They are not the most active fish, but you need to consider the long term health of your pet (and i mean very long term, bichir are reported to live up to 40+ years) and not the impact of your wallet. If you find you cant accomdate, you need to do right by the animal and forward it to someone more able in their ability to care.

Water changes are always important. The thing anyone who keeps fish must consider is stress levels. Fish literally breath their surroundings in, so a poor quality water with amonia and nitrite would spell disaster for most fish. Bichir are still subject to stress, but they are alot less susceptible to stress than other species of fish. Bichir have modified swim bladders and can literally gulp air from the water surface. This is an adaptation for their natural occuring environment, they have been known to inhabit stagnant pools of water where water oxygen levels are nearly non existant. This isnt to say they can live in a pool of feces either. Clean water means happy fish. If you want a challenge, try keeping discus and knife fish, both of which are very picky about water quality.
