I went to a LFS and commented on how I only have a 20g tank and would love to buy a few CLs from them (they have them for $6.99 at about 2"), but the tank will be too small for them when they grow up.

The shop keeper gave me two good reasons for buying them. He said

1. It will take years for them to grow large and by the time they grow to be too large for your tank you may have a larger tank to move them into or may not even have a tank at all, and

2. If they ever do get too big for you, just bring them in and we'll exchange them for smaller ones if you want.

Sounds like quite an interesting proposition. I will take his word on #2 but what about #1? How fast will these guys outgrow my 20g long if I get 3 or 4 at 2" each?

They grow very slow. But it is still good to give them a little room to be able to do it. I usually say stay away from clowns with anything under a 55g. But ehh.
Ide say 6 months, year max.

they grow pretty slow, as in SLOW

They grow from .5 to 1 inch a year, if even that...lol
