How fast do red tailed catfish grow?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Awesome! Thats what any responsible fish keeper would do.

In the spirit of not derailing this thread... They grow very fast. If you don't have the final lake set up yet, you are going to have a very hard time upgrading tanks faster than it grows.

1.5 inches per month if fed right, about 24inches in a year has been seen when starting at just 2 inches.

I meant 1.2 meters although I have seen 2 meter ones in giant tanks.

I think that's bs. They world record hook and line was just larger than 5'(62"ish). The only report I've heard of one that Big in an aquarium is in a 200,000 gallon public display in Dallas.

All fish in aquarium grow bigger than in the wild, but I say 1,2 meters and you say 5 feet which equals 1,5 meters..

Depends on the size of the aquarium. If you have like a super massive (just for conversation) 50,000 gallon or more, then they'll get bigger than in the wild. But on average I don't think they do. I have seen a couple 4 footers but I mostly see 30-40 inches. I'm no fish keeping expert but IMO one (provided an incredible filter) rtc will do fine in a 8' x 4' x 2.5' pond because they usually don't reach their full potential unless there given extreme tanks. My LFS kept one in a 480 for 13-14 years and it only got 3.5 feet long. Sorry I'm not sure what the metric conversions for these are.

How big will a rtc get in a pond as big as mine? It's like one of the last pictures. Sorry they won't transfer to my phone. Take a look and how big will one get in this size pond? I'll grow him out from like 1" to up to maybe 12" then ill drop him in the pond
