My male hystrix I got from aquascapeonline is eating absolutely great he is a pig eating about 3 worms in the morning, and 3 worms at night when I get home from work and on my day off I feed him 3 in the morning and then 1-2 every couple of hours with ghost shrimp, and cut tilapia, and a lot of other seafood some times he eats it some times my other fish do BUT I DO SEE HIM EAT is the main thing I have oscars discus and sevrums in his tank with him and I feed him through a PVC pipe or with my hands but it seems like he's barley grown at all since I got him from aquascapeonline just want to make sure I'm feeding him enough. Weird thing is, is that I see a growth spurt in his claspers when he swims up and down the tank just not really much in his disk size though. Water quality is nearly perfect so any help or if I'm doing things right let me know guys.

I guess it could have a parasite if wild caught? Although he seems to be feeding regularly 3 worms doesn't sound that much at a time, I would try to get him adding some pellets too or some other frozen food like the tilapia you mention at the same time. Mine would eat 10-20 worms at a time.

What does near perfect mean in terms of water quality? It should be nothing other than Zero nitrite and Zero ammonia all the time with a stable ph and temp. Personally I wouldn't allow nitrate above 60ppm but others argue higher, anything over 100ppm is probably a problem (the only people to argue it isn't funnily enough often have higher levels but a gradual increase over time probably doesn't show up as a problem for quite some time or the problems are not noticed I.e. shorter life and smaller size)

Use a new test kit and not dip strips.

My guy is still just a baby around 4 inches disk width no way he can eat 10-20 worms haha he usually seems to fill up on around 3-4 and won't touch anymore and will go nibble on whatever else is in there. As for ammonia None nitrites are at 15-20 ppm even after huge water changes I can't get it below that and it is a new test kit not strips. It's a 150 gallon long 20% or more water changes a week I have got him pellets by cutting the worms open and putting the pellets in after they have been soaking in water he won't touch them at all but that works. He eats great plays in the fx5 and aquaclear currents. No stress whatsoever if anything he's stressing my oscars out they don't know what to think of him and my discus just don't care. So il just boost his food intake I guess any more help would be appreciated or comments.

how long have you had him? I have had my retic since October and he has grown some in his disk but not exponentially

If he's the one you got in December I would say don't worry, he's eating enough. He's still young and these guys don't get that big anyway. Plus the males are usually always smaller then the females.

my first ray was a hystrix too.
i got him at 4"...he didnt grow that much but i didnt know any better because there wasnt much info about rays back then.
he seemed to only grow about 2" in 6 months and then, what seem like over night, he shot up to a 10" disc in under three months. he just exploded.

just keep on feeding him the times you are and dont stop until he is done eating. only you know how much your ray eats.
cheers,
v.

Thanks rayray yes its the same one just wanted to make sure there wasn't something I needed to start doing. Or something I needed to change. :) he's looking great with colors and everything heres some updated pictures.
