How fat should a Senegalus be?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I feed mine hikari sinking cichlid gold, frozen bloodworms, and chopped raw market shrimp.

Gonna switch over to hikari sinking carnivore if I can ever find an LFS that stocks it. Will prob have to order a bunch online. :irked:

I think my Short Body Albino Senegal is grossly obese then
The thing is I don't even make an effort to feed her. -_-"

My sen loves shrimp pellets HBH was good, Omega One he goes hunting for them lol

What a stumpy little guy... lol

Short bodied bichirs usually are on the plump side, but DAMN.

Looks kinda cool though. ;)

My Female senegal is 11" and is about 2" thick..i think its becoz she is full of eggs.. Anyone got tips for breeding them or has done it before ?

The males are about 7-8"and much much thinner compared to her..

I agree with Anne, for normal bichirs you don't want them to be much thicker than their heads. Once you start to see a bulge just behind the skull, it's time to cut back on feeding.

Just as with most animals, it's not healthy to eat too much.

Elindra, I consider SB a separate case. Because their physiology is 'smushed' it is actually normal for them to look obese, when that is actually their normal shape.

Mine is maybe a bit thicker than his head, sometimes he has a bulging belly like a catfish does when he's chowing on krill.

Extra bulge after a meal is fine, but if it doesn't go away by next meal, then you may be over feeding.
