How hard are discus to keep, really?

It's so easy to parrot the popular belief without trying. Discus aren't that difficult at all. Anyone who says they are, must be doing things the wrong way. Aside from the advice already given, get your fish from the right source which means you get them from your reputable local breeder, not the chain stores where you do not know how they are accommodating their stocks or where they got the stocks in the first place.

Not a bad decision :-) I love my 4 because I've had them so long but on a scale of 1-10 they only get about a 4 as far as personality. They're beautiful but lack the extra 'something' that makes Cidhlids so rewarding to keep.

I can see where you are coming from, but having them breed and watching them raise their fry is a really hard experience to match!

They are easier than they sound. I use regular tap water and they lay eggs and everything.
