lol, mine was ok. Costed me about $300 to insulate a 6' 350 gal pond. I would suggest if you can afford it to put something on the outside to protect the wood if it is a long term application. I knew mine was just for the winter so I just waterproofed the wood with sealant. I used silicone in all the seams on the outside. Was quite fun to cut the circle out of the wood with the divits in the pond and all. Took me about 2 weeks to do it all on my own. The insulation was the most expensive part as I used particle board. Make sure you waterproof it with something or it will blow up like paper that got wet and dried out.
 
to clear up partical board was the wood styrofoam and attic insulation was the insulation lol. Sounded wierd when i read it.
 
a outdoor pond in socal getting to 30's i dont think so 55 lowest i bet
 
would be easy to heat a pond even if upper 30s were the lows. If you didn't insulate or have a top it would take a lot though.
