So much for herd immunity.......

What is happening here in AB is similar to other places in the world, a situation created by the folks that oversee the building and expansion of hospital infrastructure. Hospitals are not designed to have hundreds of empty beds waiting for sick people, they typically run at near operation overload, 24/7 365. This is the part of the BIG equation that most anti-vaxxers, and anti-maskers, apparently don't seem to understand. Putting a hospital, and their staff, into the types of situations that we are currently seeing has dire consequences, for some folks it becomes life or death. Not just from covid, but for ANYONE that finds themselves in a critical health situation. Bad things are going to happen to nice people. Possibly people that you love and care about. At this point debating natural immunity, meds designed as deworming agents, etc-etc, is a moot point. People that desperately need health care at their local hospital, are going to be SOL.

I don't like the restrictions etc-etc anymore than the next person, but I like it a lot more than seeing someone that is in serious need of an operation, or some other form of treatment, not receiving the help they need due to the selfishness of others. The so called sacrifice of your rights & privilege's, could mean someone else's brain surgery being cancelled. 'A lot of tears': Albertans react after hundreds of surgeries cancelled due to COVID-19 pressures | CTV News

Probably millions of children around the world, perhaps 10's of millions, or more, not getting the care they require because of someone else's right to whatever.

Stay safe y'all.

Hello; Two things come to mind. One is that the hospitals have had for a long time a business model which does not allow for the need of extra beds at times is not accidental. The bed shortage is not just from the unvaccinated getting covid. I understand that plan. It allows for the maximum profit if a for profit hospital. It reduces upkeep costs if a non-profit. No need to maintain rooms and keep them stocked with equipment for the occasional crisis or pandemic. Makes sense it it's own way. Heck of a way to run a railroad.

The other thing is some of those beds are being used by smokers, drinkers, the obese, drug users, people riding motorcycles, folks who do not exercise in addition to the unvaccinated. Let me add that the covid fully vaccinated are also winding up in hospital in larger and larger numbers. But the thrust of you post is it is the selfishness of others as the cause of the issues. By now we all know those selfish people are the unvaccinated and apparently limited only to the unvaccinated based on the many posts about this already. Are not the drug takers, the drunks, the smokers, the obese in a sense just as guilty of being selfish.

Back to selfish. I alluded to that term a few posts ago in the discussion of some of us taking a third shot while many have not even had the first shot. That is selfish to me and non-productive in terms of stopping the pandemic on top of being selfish. But that notion did not get any traction. Guess we each can have a different definition of words like selfish.

Round & round, same net result.

Alberta has declared a state of public health emergency. COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations continue to rise, largely in unvaccinated Albertans.

It is not vaccinated people that are causing the overload on hospitals, and their staff - and seeing as the average citizen can't resolve any sudden change in how hospitals are currently ran, looking for blame, or attempting to explain it away as bad business in that area is pointless. For now, it is what it is.

As is referring to the 3rd vaccine, I am referring to the first 2 vaccines, the 3rd booster isn't even available where I live. Who do you know that has gotten a 3rd vaccine? I know no one, not even my brother who has stage 4 cancer. Refusing something that has never been offered, does not make one unselfish. Again, right now, this is a NON ISSUE for most folks in the free world.. As is discussing smokers, obesity, etc. That has always been there, and won't be changing anytime soon. Convince more folks to get healthy, join a gym, whatever, if that's the crusade you feel is important.

More nonsense and finger pointing about what if's, and what about them, instead of what is actually taking place NOW, regarding a world pandemic.

This is really sad that people with serious medical conditions cannot get medical care because of hospitals being overwhelmed with COVID-19 patients.

This man died after 43 hospitals in three states had no cardiac ICU bed for him.

Hooray for the millions of people who had COVID-19 and who were totally asymptomatic and those who had mild symptoms. Based on their personal experience, masking and vaccinations are not necessary.

But what about the 115,000 health care workers who have died from COVID-19, including the 3,600 health care workers in the US who have died from COVID-19? Many thanks to the people who work in a hazardous and many times hostile environment to try to save the lives of COVID-19 patients. Here's an article written by a senior pastor who goes and prays with patients, family members and staff members. It is heart wrenching to read about the stress and threats our dedicated health care workers endure in their attempt at saving lives. No one should have to go through what they are going through.

I would like to see more research into the people that shook off covid with little to no adverse effects. What do they have in common? I have no idea but I did hear something about blood type. I always hesitate to conflate correlation with causation

Type A blood has been associated with more severe COVID-19 illness.

The asymptomatic people are the most dangerous - they are spewing out viruses and don't even know they are infected. The first employee testing done at a nearby super maximum security prison turned up over 30 people positive with COVID-19 who were at work. Subsequent testing turned up a lot more cases of COVID-19. So far 473 staff have showed up at work and were infected including 23 new cases in the last 14 days. These people are spreading the virus with co-workers, family members and friends.

Here's some data from the zoom meeting last night giving COVID-19 updates in my community.

This graph shows vaccination status/age for those on vents, those in critical care and those who were hospitalized and in general beds. There were quite a few breakthrough infections with four requiring critical care and one placed on a ventilator. The breakthrough infections are not surprising since the CDC recommendation was that vaccinated people did not need to wear masks was in full swing. The public health order to wear masks indoors did not come out until August 26, and many businesses still do not have signs stating that masks are to be worn in their business.

This was also interesting. The age group with the highest number of infections was the 18-49 age group. These are the people who are out and about - working, going to school -- healthy vigorous members of our community
