How high are your nitrates

Yes, I bet your planted and non planted tanks are exactly the same size and had exactly the same, and number of fish so you could draw a direct comparison? Yeh i didn't think so!
 
I just read something very interesting. Plants will take up ammonia first and leave nitrates. However, plants don't expell nitrate as a by-product. Their by-product is new growth. If all ammonia is being consumed by BB then they will consume the nitrates.

The higher the plant concentration in your tank means the plants will complete with the BB for the ammonia and less nirate that will even be produced = lower nitrates.
