How hot is too hot?

I keep most of my tanks at 82-83 and I've had no ill effects, as stated before it speeds up their metabolism and I'm trying to grow them out quicker. Just keep the water well oxygenated and you'll be fine.

I guess I get paranoid in my older age. In my foray into the hobby years ago i don't think i ever looked at the temp. House had no air conditioning, left the heater set at 78 and that was that. Fish grew fast, were fat, and seemed happy.

Barely lost any fish. I guess they'll be fine.

I had my tanks at 86-88F until last Friday. I've had two deaths in the past two months. I've always had my tanks at 86-88F for the last two years that I've had it.

ive had a tank that was about 105 degrees? with a jack dempsey.lived and had nice colors but breathed a bit heavy.oscars are tough fish so i wouldnt worry about 80 degrees.

I'll second this. I keep my tank (the one in my sig) at between 82 and 84 degrees. When I treated for ich, it was at between 89 and 90 degrees for two weeks with no adverse effects. Like everyone else said, just make sure you have good oxygenation at the warmer temperatures.

Well Big Jay in my experience not really. I reside here in sunny socal, Palm springs area to be exact. Between my son and I there are about six tanks running in our garage. they all have heaters except 2. my temps outside so far have gotten up to about 120*f.With that said my garage is a blasin hot box minus the flames.here is the funny part the water in the tanks run about 84 - 91*f. I kill the heaters until about 5pm (timer) and the cooling source is a common house fan blowing in that direction. And for the 2 tanks no heater my temps haven't drop past 79*f.

You didn't mention that you'd seeded the filter beforehand :). It's generally better to do a fishless cycle but the other reason I mentioned that it wasn't a good idea is that those oscars, unless they are still small are too big to be kept in a 55gal together. If they are small, they will eventually need more space.

As others have mentioned your water isn't abnormally warm, but again higher temperatures result in quicker depletion of oxygen and good oxygenation is essential if you are doing a cycle with fish. Sounds like you've got the tank well filtered though so you'll probably be ok. You should consider where those oscars will end up eventually though.

Its ok, i received the Oscars for free. I am going to give them away soon to a good home. Probably post up on here. They are really nice, great color, but i've kept them in the past and they don't do much for me.

I really would prefer not to have to just drop them at the LFS but they aren't suited for my tank like you said.
