how i clean pool filter sand "with pics"

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
at least i dont feel like im the only one now. what is all that stuff the clouds your water anyways. isnt pool filter sand supposed to be clean since its FILTER sand?

I boiled the sand and rinsed each bucket out several times, and the water was still cloudy for a few hours. Guess I just wasn't patient enough with the washing.

Thats what I always thought too but apparently not. :irked:

does the water have to be crystal clear after stirring up the sand? i mean like does the aftermath have to be as clear as before i stir up the sand? im on my 60th refill. not overexxagerating.

I used a 5 gallon bucket and did a 50 pound bag in two loads.
Just blasted water into the sand until it ran clear.
I was lucky it only took me about 15 mins to clean.

Im a little late on this thread, but i too just purchased 3x50 lbs bags of "pool filter" silica sand for my newest 125G fw tank. My tank was partially full and all i did was was pour all three bags into the tank and aggitate the sand. Let the sand settle while doing a complete water change, ploped a filter on it and vuala! Nice clean water.

I just used PFS for the first time... no rinsing... perfect clarity. however, there is high variability in sands depending on where they were collected and who packaged it. when in doubt, rinse it out!

hm....i'm going to get sand for my new flounder today! Then I caught this post...nice!
It helps me now, thx for sharing ^.^
