Hand held IR thermometer, I check my tank, them match my tap. Simple, cheap and accurate!

Very cool F1. I usually match by touch and then I keep the thermometer there to just watch it.

Great idea.. but how you hold the temp of the faucet water??

Point it at the hose! Just match the tank and incoming tap, reduces stress greatly, even 1-2 degrees is a fluctuation. Or you can point it at the stream of water going into your tank.

That's cool. I never knew you could do that, I have one of those things lying around.

Unplug your heater and add water slightly warmer than the tank water. Once done wait about 15min and plug the heater back in. That's what I do.

Slightly warmer water is fine. Water colder than the tanks can put fish into shock.

I always add water through a hose from the tap, going through a carbon filter. I use what ever the temp from the cold spigot is year round. I have it running very slowly (roughly 1/2 hr for 50 gal) so it is never a concern. Been doing it this way for 30+ years with no problem, although the use of the carbon is just in the last 10 years.

Here is the filter I use, replaced 2X a year.
