How important is carbon?

I was actually a big fan of Purigen. That thing kept my water crystal clear! Although I stopped using that after I got an FX5

I want an FX5.. but its soo pricy.. haven't found the $199 deal in a long time..

yup its not that necessary and i dont use it because i like the tannin in my tank
 
I use carbon as it remove as sorts of stuff from the water. It you have poor tap water it can help.
