How important is carbon?

Tannins are the darkened color the water gets from driftwood usually. It helps with that purigen is good for removing tannins as well. Basically your water gets a little brownish.

I was actually a big fan of Purigen. That thing kept my water crystal clear! Although I stopped using that after I got an FX5

Carbon is not necessary. I use it only when I want the tannins and medicines removed out of the tank.

yup its not that necessary and i dont use it because i like the tannin in my tank

I use carbon as it remove as sorts of stuff from the water. It you have poor tap water it can help.
