How Important is Reverse Osmosis

to answer your question plain and simply it is important if you do not want to spend most your time scrubbing algae which i suffer and will be getting ro/di from the grocery store with the big dispensing units they have ;)

I would be hard pressed to say that tap water is the primary reason you have algae in your tank. Unwanted algae in aquaria exists for numerous reasons.... amount of light run per day, amount of nitrates and phosphates currently existing in the water.
Keep in mind that what you need to do is test your tank water, identify the root of the problem, and fix it from there.
Remember also that the amount of food that you feed your livestock will contribute to adding of phosphates and nitrates.

I know a guy in LaSalle, IL. that has a pet store with corals, inverts and marine fish and he uses all well water with no ro/di unit at all and has been doing this for 30 yrs. Im not into corals but they looked as good as alot of other lfs that have all the water clearifying goodies. Pretty strange isnt it?

not in particular. I up until more recently, used tap water with my tank, and my tank flourished with life. I had never gotten any type of algae bloom at all.
Keep in mind all places are different and water quality also would be the contributing factor. If you know that certain things work, then they just will.

Id use one, I hate all the junk in city water, and even well water in some locations. I dont know jack about australia water and what not, but most city suppliers will use some form of sterilizing agent, which rest assured is not a natural source in the ocean. Use your best judgement and go from there. Good luck.
