How important is subtrate?

If you take 2 tanks that are the same size and have the same filtration. But one has substrate and one is bare bottom, the bare bottom tank will not be able to handle the stock and or bio-load that the substrated tank could handle. This is because the substrate will house a large percentage of bio-logical bacteria. Most commonly bare bottom tanks will need more bio-media and or filters to make up for the lack of substrate/bio area's.

Yep, and substrate also just looks nicer. You can always have a thin layer of substrate if you are lazy. I always have and always will use a substrate.

barebottom works just as well....
